Public Health Concentration

Program Description

The Public Health Concentration within the Associate in Science in Public Health and Human Performance is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in public health or a related field focused on improving community health and well-being.

This concentration introduces students to the principles of population health, disease prevention, and health promotion. Students explore how social, environmental, and behavioral factors influence health outcomes while developing an understanding of strategies used to improve health at the community and population level. Coursework emphasizes critical thinking, data-informed decision-making, and the role of public health initiatives in addressing health disparities and promoting wellness.

The program prepares students for continued study in public health and related disciplines focused on community health, health education, and health policy.

Transfer Information

The Public Health concentration is structured to align with bachelor’s degree programs in public health, community health, health promotion, and related disciplines.

Students are encouraged to work closely with faculty and Advising & Transfer Services to ensure coursework aligns with the requirements of their intended transfer institution. Students planning to transfer within New Jersey should explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer (www.njtransfer.org) to review articulation agreements and institutional requirements.

Early academic planning is recommended for students interested in specialized areas of public health, including epidemiology, environmental health, health education, and health policy.

Career Information

The A.S. in Public Health and Human Performance – Public Health Concentration is designed primarily for transfer. A bachelor’s degree is typically required for professional roles in public health, and some positions require graduate study.

With further education, graduates may pursue careers such as:

  • Public Health Educator
  • Community Health Program Coordinator
  • Health Promotion Specialist
  • Epidemiology or Public Health Research Assistant
