Environmental Health Concentration

Program Description

The Environmental Health Concentration within the Associate in Science in Public Health and Human Performance is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in environmental health, environmental science, public health, or a related field.

This concentration focuses on the relationship between environmental conditions and human health. Students examine how factors such as air and water quality, hazardous materials, workplace exposures, and environmental policy influence community health and safety. Coursework emphasizes scientific analysis, risk assessment, environmental monitoring, and strategies used to prevent and mitigate environmental hazards.

As part of this concentration, students complete the Industrial Hygiene and Hazardous Materials Management Certificate of Completion, gaining practical knowledge and training in environmental sampling, hazard assessment, and workplace safety practices. This embedded certificate provides applied skills that complement the academic foundation of the degree program.

Transfer Information

The Environmental Health concentration is structured to align with bachelor’s degree programs in environmental health, environmental science, environmental policy, and public health.

Students are encouraged to work closely with faculty and Advising & Transfer Services to ensure coursework aligns with the requirements of their intended transfer institution. Students planning to transfer within New Jersey should explore the “Transfer Programs” feature on NJ Transfer (www.njtransfer.org) to review articulation agreements and institutional requirements.

Early academic planning is recommended, particularly for students interested in specialized areas such as environmental health science, occupational health and safety, or environmental regulation.
