Academic & Tutoring Support Services

The Tutoring Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Instructional Building, Room 218.

The Tutoring Center provides tutoring and academic support in a wide variety of subjects to supplement students' coursework. Professional and peer tutors are well-trained and committed to helping students become independent, confident learners while they complete their degrees and enter, or progress, into the workforce. Some tutoring services are one-on-one, while others may be held in group sessions. Tutoring and Academic Support Services are available in person, during a video call, or via email. Video call sessions are conducted through WebEx, and students will automatically be sent the link for their session by email after scheduling.

Students must schedule all tutoring sessions with the full intent of attending. Students who miss three scheduled sessions in a semester will be restricted from using the TracCloud scheduling tool directly and will need to contact the appropriate service area during regular business hours to request appointments. If students need to cancel an appointment, they must do so at least 12 hours in advance, which can be done in TracCloud, or by calling 732-255-0400 ext. 2431.

The Tutoring Center is comprised of four areas: The Writing Center, STEM Center, General Tutoring Center, and Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) program and Supplemental Instruction (SI). For more information, please visit The Center's web page, or stop by Room 218 in the Instructional Building to inquire about services.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) & Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Programs

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a grant-funded academic assistance program for challenging Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses featuring weekly collaborative study sessions. Regularly scheduled weekly sessions are held in the CTE Supplemental Instruction Center, Instructional Building 5, Room 117. Additional remote and blended sessions are also available.

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is an academic support model for courses that have been identified as historically difficult. The program provides academic support to students in these courses by employing model students to attend the course and then facilitate or lead collaborative learning groups outside of regularly scheduled class time. These collaborative learning groups help students master content, learn and integrate study strategies, and improve student persistence.

Peer Tutoring Opportunities

Peer tutoring is available throughout the fall and spring semesters for various subjects. Peer tutors can help students improve learning, utilize resources, and gain self-confidence.  For information on becoming a peer tutor, contact Lorraine Stevenson at LStevenson@ocean.edu.
